| Chechnya Just north of the main Caucasus chain and Tusheti-Khevsureti lies the infamous Chechen republic. It is part of the Russian Federation which some Chechens view as an occupying power. The main thrust of the Chechen rebels and terrorists has always been against the occupying Russian forces. They have never taken their fight into Georgia with which they are keen to maintain good relationships. In addition to this during the last year or two the main rebel forces have been greatly weakened. We are quite confident that this trek will not be affected in any way by the proximity of the Chechen border. Tourism in Svanetia has for several years since the breakdown on the Soviet Union been plagued by the gangs of bandits who marauded in the foothills of the Caucasus. With return of stability, law and order to Georgia this problem has been addressed vigorously and it is now again possible to visit this most magnificent mountain land safely. | ![]() | |
