| Mtshkheta - Georgia Just a short drive from Tbilisi, also lying on the Mtkvari River, is Mtskheta, the old capital and spiritual heart of Georgia. Remains of towns built at this location have been dated to be some 3000 years old and the town was the capital of the Georgian Kingdom from 500BC to 500AD. This was where Georgia accepted Christianity at the beginning of 4AD. The monuments in Mtskheta are some of the most significant and important in Georgia and have been listed in the UNESCO World's Cultural Heritage List. Also the town is still the headquarters of the Georgian church. 11th century Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is located in the town by the river. A short way above the town is the 6th century Jvari Monastery. Slightly further away from the town and nestling in the surrounding hills is Samtavro church that deserves a visit if time permits. | ![]() Saint George | |
