Introduction: Savage Wilderness Safaris are Kenya's only professional whitewater rafting outfitter. With 20 years experience you can assure you will have a safe and enjoyable rafting experience. Trips range from Class II family float trips to exciting whitewater and expedition style multi day river journey's.

Tana River: The most popular one day trip ideal for people with a day or two to spare when visiting Nairobi, or those coming off Mount Kenya. This will be an exciting day of thrills (and often spills) with a great mix of high action whitewater (up to grade V) interspersed with scenic calm water where birdlife abounds. Not enough? Why not leap feet first into a big surfing hole, jump a 30ft waterfall or swim ‘The Devils Toilet Bowl’ (water level dependant).

If coming from Nairobi a typical day trip starts in Nairobi at 8am. A 90 min. drive takes you to Savage Camp, Sagana. Here you can relax with tea/coffee and biscuits before receiving a comprehensive safety briefing. After signing a compulsory release and assumption of risk form we will drive up to the put in where you will receive some final practical training before heading down river. The trip is either 16km (high water season) or 8km (low water season) and lasts approximately 4hrs. This varies greatly due to the water levels and we often find ourselves rafting 8km one day, then 11km the next due to rain upstream. The trip takes out at Savage Camp, where you can enjoy a solar heated shower or relax in the pool before enjoying a three course barbeque lunch. Trips depart Savage Camp no later than 5pm for Nairobi to ensure you arrive back at your pick up point before dark.

If coming from Mount Kenya you should arrive by lunch unless you are planning to stay at Savage Camp overnight.

Other options available on the Tana include scenic float trips from the camp downstream on completely flat water for those not wishing to experience any whitewater. This trip lasts 4hrs and takes in the abundant birdlife inhabiting the lush riverine forests along the river. To date our guides have recorded over 120 species of birds on this section. Trips are usually taken by a Kenya Professional Safari Guide.

New to our repertoire of Tana trips is the full moon run. This takes in the whitewater section only and lasts about 3hrs. Please contact us for more details and dates for full moon run.

Savage Camp: This the main base for rafting on the Tana. It is located just off the main Mt Kenya to Nairobi road and can be reached from either the mountain in about one and a half hours. Green lawns with shady trees provide relaxing camping beside the Tana River. Solar heated showers, covered BBQ areas, a small swimming pool, bungee jumping are all available on the site.
