Tamerlane, or Timur, made Samarkand the capital of his vast empire and named it the "Centre of the Universe". Many of the magnificent monuments dating back to his days have been well-preserved. These include Gur-Emir, the Registan, Shahi Zinda and the Ulugbek memorial. The tomb of Gur Emir now is the burial place of Tamerlane, Shakhrukh, Ulugbek and others.
