| Excellent value for money and very caring ski schools are the main selling
points of a ski holiday in Bulgaria. Although resorts tend to be small they
offer high quality skiing and they are relatively unspoilt. The continental
climate results in cold sunny weather dominating the winter until late February
allowing for fine powder snow conditions, by late March it is possible to ski
in a T-shirt although at resorts such as Bansko skiing continues till the end
of April. Christmas skiing is not guaranteed - however generally by New Year
one of the resorts should have good skiing. We primarily deal with two resorts. Borovets is a purpose developed, world famous, international, small resort on the edge of the Rila mountains. It is an hours drive from Sofia. There are 15 lifts, including a very efficient gondola taking you over the forested lower slopes to the more open higher ski areas which go up to 2560m. The total length of runs is about 40km. Several excellent hotels are just a few minutes walk from the lower gondola station. We in particular recommend the Rila Hotel (***) and Samokov Hotel (****). Both have a large swimming pool and many other facilities for their residents. All rooms offer en-suite facilities and satellite television. Other features at these hotels include various shops, cafes, business centres, live shows, discotheque, children's play areas, ski rental, ski school, horseback riding, fitness, sauna, and medical centre. There is also a bowling alley at the Samokov. Bansko The small town of Bansko is located just below the northern slopes of the Pirin Mountains - these go up to almost 3000m and have a very alpine character. The town has a population of about 20,000 and has a history going back many hundreds of years. The very well preserved city centre, winding, narrow cobbled streets and old church add a lot of atmosphere to Bansko which is also one of the main cultural centres of Southern Bulgaria. A brand new gondola system takes you directly from Bansko to the heart of the
resort which has just a few years ago been upgraded to a prime resort with 30km
of runs, mainly north facing, with excellent off-piste and snowboarding, many
fast, state-of-the-art chair lifts and several drag lifts. There are several hotels available at Bansko, the Bulgaria and Pirin are both ****, have swimming pools and other facilities and are on a par with the best hotels in Borovets. Many smaller *** hotels exist which offer exceptionally good value for money - some have satellite TV, bars, saunas, fitness rooms and are fully en-suite with a shower and toilet. The Georgi has a very friendly atmosphere and a real Bulgarian atmosphere. If you opt for one of these you can still have access to the swimming pools of the other hotels. |
