Tassili Hoggar and Hoggar Mountains

Tassili Hoggar 4x4 supported trekking 8 day
This is a 4x4 trip exploring the magnificent landscapes and unusual rock-formations of the Tassili Hoggar (background info), the trip finishes with an excursion to heart of the Hoggar Mountains with an ascent of Assakrem - the 4th highest summit (background info). Each day there will be opportunities for several hours of trekking - just after breakfast, around the lunch period and in the evening. Trekking is optional, some may prefer to relax and explore the camp and lunch areas which are all in magnificent locations. Apart from the first night all meals will be in the open desert and nights spent under the stars. NB At Assakrem we might use simple cabins for accommodation if it is too windy.

Main highlights
Engravings, paintings, dunes, gheltas (natural waterholes), rock formations, nomads and their encampments. The Hoggar are themselves an National Park and a unique mountain area.

Daily Programme
Breakfast is generally served just after sunrise, then while the vehicles are packed you will set off walking. The morning's walk is rarely more than 1 hour. After about 3 hours of driving with several stops to visit sights on interest there is an extended lunch break. This is generally in the shade with oportunities to take a short walk to explore the area or look at petroglyphs. In the afternoon we will drive for a further 2-3 hours (with stops included) to the next campsite. Opportunities to walk to the camp or at the campsite will be available.

Outline Itinerary

1. Arrive late in Tamanrasset. Night in clean, guesthouse in twin-bedded rooms with shared showers and washroom area.
2. Drive into the heart of the Hoggar Mountains. Ascend Assakrem in the evening and / or the morning. Visit the hermit Pere Faucault's shelter near the summit.
3. Drive to Tassili.
4. Visit Tilenfeza.
5. Continue to Youfahakit.
6. Visit Tagrera.
7. Tinakachker.
8. Return to Tamanrasset to rooms in our original guesthouse for a clean up and sort out. Visit the town, meal in the desert (option to eat in town) before the night flight home.
