EWP (UK) - History
In 1986 the company opened an office in the UK. Registered as Factpass Ltd, it traded as Executive Wilderness Programmes until 1989 when it changed its trading name to EWP. At the same time the Kenyan company changed ownership and is now independant of EWP (UK).
In 1991 with the opening up of the former Eastern Block, Andrew Wielochowski, a director of EWP (UK) who spoke Polish and Russian established contacts in Eastern Europe and soon EWP built up associations with leading experts in a variety of outdoor activity fields in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria, Russia, Turkey, the Azores, parts of Italy and Central Asia. We now have representative organisations in all of these countries.
In 2010 we established a permanent presence in Turkey with a base manned all year round by our local guide Christian Kollinsky supported by EWP staff. Local organisations and guides provide services to support all our programmes in Turkey.
We have a core of fully qualified technical climbing guides who accompany our expeditions requiring technical mountain guiding. We also use local experts: in East Africa many of our trips are led by local guides who have been trained and / or approved by us. These guides are not responsible for technical climbing guiding. However in the Caucasus and Central Asia our local guides are generally "Masters of Sport" and mountaineering experts of the highest calibre. All our trips are led by English speaking guides who have been trained by us. In the former Soviet Union well equipped doctors accompany our trips into remote areas. In less remote areas we have trained first aiders in every group. In East Africa our local walking guides have basic first aid knowledge and on the Major East African mountains they can quickly obtain professional help from the local park rescue teams.
EWP (UK) - Maps
Many of the areas we operated in had maps which were either out of print, restricted or out of date. To remedy this we used our local expertise and with the help of cartographers we published our range of maps. West Col Productions (UK), The Geographic Bureau, (St Petersburg) and Bel Alpin (Romania) were involved with this work and many of our maps are jointly published with these companies. See Maps.
Responsible Tourism Declaration We at EWP are passionate about the outdoors and have a love and respect for the environment which we feel it to be a duty to pass on and share with others. With 23 years experience of operating adventure tours our committment is now fully directed towards improving the environment for the communities with whom we work. Please see our Responsible Travel and Ecotourism Policy.
