    Tipping

    The tips below are purely given as a guideline. Poor service should result in lower tips; in serious circumstances a report should be lodged with Zara staff or on the Zara feedback form. We recommend the following amounts are not exceeded except in special circumstances.

    All tips below are per day, per group.

    All routes on Mt Meru & Kilimanjaro
    Guide $15 -20
    Cook $10-12
    Assistant guide $10
    per Porter $7

    Up to 15kgs of your personal luggage is carried for you. If you have extra to be carried another porter is hired at an additional cost of $10 per day plus his tip.

    Gifts in addition are also appreciated - eg warm clothing or footwear.

    Note
    Expect 1-2 guides per 8 hikers, 1 assistant guide per 3 hikers; 3 porters per hiker on the Marangu Route, 3-4 on longer routes, 4 if camping in the crater; the minimum number of porters for any group is 4 on the Marangu Route, 5 on the Umbwe, Machame and Rongai, 8 on Lemosho.
