"Government House is a completely new building at the top of Millcombe Valley. On an island where shelter is at a premium, it is strange that no building occupied this position before. Perhaps the answer lies in its proximity to Millcombe House, home of the Heaven family who would not have wished to be overlooked. The building was designed as accommodation for whoever runs the island, making use of the fine granite dressings which became available when additions to the Old House were removed, but is now available for visitors. It is one of the best houses on the island, with spacious rooms and two bathrooms, and so well sited that it seems always to have been there."

There is a small book library in Government House.
