We have quoted a short section from the Landmark Trusts' introductory page on their website. "The island of Lundy, ten miles off the coast of North Devon where the Atlantic meets the Bristol Channel, is three miles long and rises over four hundred feet out of the sea, commanding a tremendous view of England, Wales and the Atlantic. It has tall cliffs towards the south and west, with grass and heather on top, and steep side lands with trees, shrubs and bracken in small hanging valleys on the east coast facing the mainland. There are three lighthouses (two in use), a castle, church, shop, tavern, an active farm, several handsome houses and cottages, and a population of about 18. Most of the buildings and all the field walls are made of the island's beautiful granite. Lundy offers a very rare experience. It is large enough to have a genuine life of its own, which visitors can share and enjoy, but small and far enough away to be a world apart and unspoilt. It offers both the pleasures of escape and the pleasures of anticipation: walks high up, in the silence, looking east across the blue floor of the sea to the Devon coast, or westward over the limitless Atlantic; or sociable visits to the Marisco Tavern and shop. Opportunities abound for Field Studies of all kinds; and for activities such as rock climbing, diving and snorkelling in the Marine Nature Reserve. Everybody has the free run of the whole island, and it is surprising how much out of the ordinary there is to do and see at all times of the year. Our handsome supply ship, the MS Oldenburg, runs from Bideford or Ilfracombe, carrying day and staying visitors, weather permitting. On the island we have made it possible to stay at various levels of price and comfort - in buildings of varying kinds, or camping - so that almost anyone can afford to be here. Your arrival on the island is an event. To come here, even for a day, is a small adventure. But all those who experience the space and light, the life of the island, and the natural beauty all around, have thereafter something in common which they treasure. There are 23 houses and cottages, including a castle and a lighthouse, in which you can stay on Lundy. . . " |
