| Marrakech (Marrakesh) Founded in 1062 by sultan Youssef bin Tachfin, the city of Marrakesh was soon to become one of the jewels of North Africa. Its fate varied over the centuries and it was almost completely destroyed in 1147. Now it is one of the more magical North African cities, with its airy avenues and beautiful gardens of the new city adjacent to the twisty narrow bustling streets of the medina and the numerous fascinating shops in the souqs. In the spring, on a clear day, the palm trees and reds of the city walls are set against the background of the snowy Atlas Mountains. One of the main attractions however is the Djemaa el-Fina, a huge open square that is the centre of life in Marrakesh. Here street performers, innumerable food stalls, snake charmers, musicians and acrobats all find space to entertain themselves, the locals and tourists alike. Just off the square can be seen one of the most famous mosques in the city - the Koutoubia Mosque with its prominent minaret dominating the city. There are several fine monuments to be seen in Marrakesh, the Palais el-Badi was reputed to be one of the most beautiful in the world, the Ali ben Youssef Medersa contains some beautiful decorations and the Palais de la Bahia is another monument of great architectural beauty. An unusual attraction located not far from the central square is a cyberpark with internet access points set amongst groves of trees and ornamental shrubs. ![]()
