Since the break-up of the Soviet Union, Moscow has undergone dramatic ages. During the Soviet period it was a grey city under complete police control, beautiful but austere. With the break-up came freedom from the police state and law and order began breaking down, the streets became unsafe with drunks and petty theft and rubbish abounding. Then, as the new authorities gradually began to take control of the situation, came improvement.

Now Moscow is again a beautiful, safe and fascinating city to visit. There are many museums and magnificent monuments to be seen, the hotels, restaurants and shopping areas rival the best in Europe and a journey on the underground itself is an experience as one passes through beautifully decorated stations finished in marble.

But Moscow is like an island in Russia. Great amounts of money have been poured in to make this a wealthy European city. Just a short journey out of the capital takes you into another world that has improved little since Soviet days and that extends for thousands of miles in all directions.

Just wandering around the Red Square with the exotic St Basil's Church, the Kremlin and Lenin's Mausoleum can provide a taste of Moscow. Time permitting one can spend many hours visiting the many museums and churches inside the Kremlin.

Several of our programmes use flights passing through Moscow and it is possible to extend your trip by one day and overnight in one of the hotels by the Red Square to be able to see Moscow. City tours on foot or by vehicle are an optional extra.
