Best Time to Climb Kilimanjaro
There a three rainy months on Kilimanjaro: April, May and then in November towards in the later part of the year.
Climbing during these months you experience tougher and wetter conditions and quite possible the summit maybe covered in fog and clouds; that said is still possible to climb Kilimanjaro during these months. If you are thinking of climbing during this quieter, but wetter, time then you should think about taking the Lemosho / Rongai routes as less rain falls on that side of the mountain.
The two drier periods December to Mid/Late March & June to October. If you are thinking this maybe the best time to climb Kilimanjaro then it’s worthwhile knowing that:
- December to Late March is the quieter time to trek Kilimanjaro.
- June to October being the busiest of the season is the perfect time to join other groups or meet other people on the mountain. Whereas if you are more interested in a quieter experience in the drier season the Rongai, Umbwe & Lemosho route are recommended. Don’t be too concerned though as Kilimanjaro is a very large mountain and “busy” still means you can go very long stretches without seeing anyone.
Whenever you choose to get to the summit of Kili; you still need to be prepared for a range of temperatures as at night summit can drop to -20 degrees celsius. The day time temperatures on the lower part of the mountain do not vary greatly through the seasons due to the mountains proximity to the equator and are around 21- 27 degrees celsius.
